ecrireflecheflecheThe Éric Weil Centre

The “Éric Weil Research Centre” was officially founded in 1981 as part of the Philosophy Department of Lille 3 University by a group of Éric Weil's former students, most of whom had taken his classes in Lille between 1956 and 1968—in particular, his seminar on the Logic of Hegel's Encyclopedia held from 1963 until his departure for Nice in 1968.

After the philosopher's death on February 1, 1977, this group (Gérard Almaleh, Albert Baraquin, Pierre Belaval, Lucien Bescond, Mireille Depadt, Elie Doumit, Gilbert Kirscher, Emilienne Naert, Jean Quillien, Jean-François Robinet, and Claude and Pierre Roubinet) regularly gathered to hold continued discussions inspired by the preparation of a 1970 issue of the Archives de Philosophie entitled “Hommage à Éric Weil”. A meeting in the city of Chantilly between Livio Sichirollo and several of Weil's young friends from Italy, followed by a conference organised in 1979 by Livio Sichirollo and Remo Bodei at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, preceded the official foundation of the Centre in Lille. Articles in the Cahiers Philosophiques, published by the CNDP, an initial collection of studies (Sept études sur Éric Weil, published by the University Press of Lille 3), an international conference organised with the help of the Archives de Philosophie group which took place at the Fontaines centre in Chantilly on May 21-22, 1982, and the release of previously unpublished works by Weil (Philosophie et Réalité, Beauchesne, 1982), were vital first steps for the “Éric Weil Centre”, whose successive directors were Emilienne Naert, Jean Quillien, Catherine Kintzler, and Patrice Canivez.

The Centre took on the task of studying and disseminating the philosophical works of Éric Weil, but also, more generally, that of inspiring reflection and dialogue on education and the fundamental problems involved: ontology (understanding and meaning, the possibility of dialogue, logical dialectic and violence, etc.), the philosophy of praxis (morals, politics, education, history), the history of philosophy (the heritage of Hegel, Kant, Heidegger, Marx, Aristotle, et al.). Monthly conferences, all of which shared a relatively precise question, continued for two or three years, quickly gathering large, faithful audiences who participated in a discussion which was carried on the following month.

Ties to other universities in France and abroad—notably Urbino, in Italy, where Weil felt at home, as well as in Pisa, Nice, Nantes, Münster, Brussels, and Ouagadougou—led to the organisation of conferences, workshops, professor exchanges, joint publications, and the hosting of doctoral candidates.

Meanwhile, the Centre released unpublished works by Weil and translations of his writings (in German, Italian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbo-Croatian, etc.).

The following list of publications to which the Éric Weil Centre has made a contribution bears witness to the immense labour which inspired the heirs of Éric Weil—first Anne Weil and then Catherine Mendelsohn—to donate his legacy to the Éric Weil Centre, and to name the directors of the Centre as executors of his will—first Emilienne Naert, then, jointly, Gilbert Kirscher and Jean Quillien.

In 2006, following a fusion of certain research departments at Lille 3 University, the members of the Éric Weil Centre decided to merge into the Joint Research Unit (UMR) 8163 “Sciences, Texts, Language” (STL) at Lille III. The “Éric Weil Centre” therefore ceased to exist.

The “Friends of Éric Weil” Association continues to ensure, as it has done since 2001, the execution of the provisions of the will and testament of the Weil-Mendelsohn legacy and, in particular, the management of the Éric Weil Library and the “Éric Weil Archives”.
